The first time I met my husband's family was on Thanksgiving. Every year at Thanksgiving, my mother-in-law would go around the table and have everyone say what they are thankful for. I was unaware of this tradition and was a little worried about what to say. I was a bit nervous and now sweating as it was getting closer and closer to my turn. I quickly realized that I had been so busy dealing with the hustle and bustle of everyday life that I had not taken time to be thankful for anything!
As I thought about it, It came to me all at once and as such, I suddenly became overwhelmed with emotion for all I was grateful for. It was at that very moment, when my mother-in-law turned to me and said, "Lisa, what are you grateful for?"
As I babbled on with tears streaming down my face, his entire family (including him) just stared at me! I definitely showed my emotions that day! But it was the start of a really good tradition for us. Even though my mother-in-law has passed, we still have this tradition in our growing family each Thanksgiving. It has taught us all to take a moment and acknowledge those things that you truly are grateful for. It has also caused quite a bit of laughs and other emotions as the kids say things I never would have thought of! But, most of all, I feel it has given all of us a perspective to look for the good in our lives. A useful trait for sure.
It can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day noise and negativity. With news, social media and the internet sending messages from uncertain agendas, it can raise blood pressures for sure! I urge you to look for the good. The wins in your life and those things you can be truly grateful for.
From my family to yours, wishing you a Thanksgiving filled with warmth, joy, and moments to be truly grateful for.
Best,
Lisa Terrenzi
